I just don't understand. I read this and again..I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND?
Richard Nieuwenhuizen died on Monday after an incident following a U17 match in Almere on Sunday. He was officiating for the Buitenboys team, in which his son was playing a home match against SV Nieuw Sloten.
The incident, which took place in the moments directly after the final whistle, saw members of the visiting side aged just 15 and 16 punch the 41-year-old to the ground, continuing the assault while he lay on the pitch.
Nieuwenhuizen, who had been verbally berated by the youths throughout the match, collapsed hours after the game and was taken to hospital where he fell into a coma. He died the following day.
Police arrested three members of the Nieuw Sloten youth team after the incident.
They will be charged later on Tuesday by the local prosecutor, who is expected to decide whether they should be tried for murder or manslaughter.
Dutch Sports Minister Edith Schippers described the act as "absolutely horrible".
"This has nothing to do with the sport and cannot be tolerated in any way. The Dutch FA and justice will react very hard for this kind of behaviour," she said. "It is absolutely terrible that something like this can happen on a Dutch sports field."
The Dutch FA have also condemned the assault, and a spokesman said: "Against such individuals who can do something like this at any time on a football field because something or someone they do not like, there is nothing we can do.”
Anton Binnenmars of the Dutch FA added that it was "too crazy for words that somebody involved in a sporting hobby becomes a victim of this kind of aggression".
Nieuw Sloten said they were "deeply shocked" by what had happened and intended to ban for life any players found to be responsible for the official's death.
The club board have reportedly withdrawn their team from the league and temporarily suspended all their operations as a club.
