I seem to be putting extreme focus on the transfer part of it with these thoughts in mind.
I am having trouble putting this into form, so I will go by example using just the goal position to express my thoughts.
Goal keeper: Currently Krul @ 5.5 and Jaaskelainen @4.5.
I would dearly love the additional (.5) I would have by changing Jaaskelainen to say Cerny @4.0 as it could make a huge difference with my defenders allowing me a 5.0 (some great options) upgrade from a 4.5. However...
I feel I have now limited myself to only one goal keeper as there are zero options in the 4.0 range and several in the 4.5 so my option to strengthen that position with someone who is playing much better then my Jaaskelainen choice like a Ruddy or Begovic and even a Federicci with a (one to one) transfer has been removed unless I lose points because unless I have extra funds available I would need to transfer out two players because there would be know other way to increase to funds needed as I would only have the 4.0 to work with by dropping Cerny.
Having a back up goal keeper in the 4.5 range keeps several options open to strengthen that position (without penalty) if needed. Having the 4.0 Cerny basically has me at...Krul or nothing.
The same thoughts would apply to say the lowest midfielders available at 4.5 like Obertan or Britton being used as fillers. If you have zero funds available you will most certainly lose penalty points when (if ever) you decide you need to move these players.
My conclusion to this messed up post is this: (without extra funds in the bank)
Having players at any position at the lowest cost available without any viable options remaining at that position, may cost you in the long haul negating their value as fillers to begin with. (guess I could have just said that!)
I apologize to everyone who struggled reading this but I spent to much time on it to delete it...
