The Midfield: Price is Right

Official EPL fantasy format

There are quite a few mid-priced midfielders that are putting up numbers worthy of a higher price. While there is one out there that hasn't had very much playing time but is no doubt a talented player that had a nice game this past week. I'm talking about Gaston Ramirez of Southampton who is priced at 6.0 over at the EPL site.

The other mid-priced midfielders currently enjoying a great start to the campaign are (prices listed first, total points scored thus far in brackets):

Damien Duff 6.2 (33)

Kevin Nolan 6.2 (29)

Steven Pienaar 6.6 (28)

Wayne Routledge 5.1(27)

Jonathon Walters 6.4 (24)

Alex Kacanikilic 4.7 (23)

Michael Kightly 5.5 (23)

James Morrison 6.0 (23)

Let's put this into perspective a little bit. Gareth Bale started the season priced at 9.5, his value has dipped a little and is now priced at 9.3. Bale has only manged 24 points thus far. Alex Kacanikilic, who started off at 4.5 and has seen his value jump a little bit has 1 point less and was 5.0 cheaper! Same goes for Steven Gerrard who started off priced at 9.5, now at 9.4, he only has 23 points, the same amount as Alex. Juan Mata is another expensive "stud" that has had a slow start, currently priced at 8.9, he only has 14 points to show for himself. Antonio Valencia, Theo Walcott and Nani are three other high profile players that are not giving owners a proper return on their investment. Perhaps the most disappointing of the high profile players is David Silva of Manchester City. Coming off a fantastic season last year, he has been extremely slow out of the gates this season, with a grand total of 9 points so far. I believe, if I remember correctly, Silva started off priced at 10.0. He has now seen his price drop to 9.6, and could be in for more of a dip if something doesn't change soon. Although, he is coming off his best fantasy performance of the young season, providing an assist against Arsenal, giving him 5 points. It's sad though that 5 out of his 9 points came in this last game.

Now let's take a look at Gaston Ramirez priced at 6.0. He has played 1 game and a half. First game he only played 45 minutes and tallied just 1 point. This past week against Aston Villa he went the full 90, provided an assist and finished the game with 5 total points. Gaston is a very talented young lad and will need some time to adjust to the Premier League as most players that transfer from Serie A, La Liga etc do need. However, 6 points from 2 games is a good start and shows promise. Gaston could go on to have a stellar season both in fantasy and real life and at 6.0 this is a chance for owners to get in from the ground stage and reap the benefits.

Let's put this to you, dear reader. Which of the mid-priced midfielders listed in this article would you want on your team and why?
