I won't call it "prevailing wisdom," but there's a notion circulating in the YFF/NMA world that gamers who hit the highest scores in any given week are mostly lucky -- they either hit the jackpot with their all-Chelsea squad or they just pulled the right names out of a hat. I'm as guilty of that brush-off as anyone. But having the ability (and the software ... AND the inclination) to dig deeper into the reams of YFF data than is available to most of the public, I decided to test that theory -- are the highest weekly scorers just "broken clocks," or are they serious gamers like you and me?
Below is a table of the Top 50 high-game scorers from last weekend. The Week 5 results (last weekend) are sorted so that the high team is on top.
I have to say that I'm surprised -- while there are a few lucky ducks in there the teams with total scores over 500 would land in the top 35 of my own Blog League 5.
So my apologies to all the top scorers I've offended. My misguided opinion was simple jealousy, nothing more.
PS: Congratulations to Das Boot 8, a frequent NMA contributor, for his excellent 140 point score last weekend, good for 23rd place on the Top Scorers list. I was certainly dead wrong in my previous assumptions where he is concerned. Also to Réal KREM2, who pulled zeroes the first two weeks of the season but got a 141.5 last weekend to make the Top 50 list. Not sure if that's enough to get them back into contention in their league, but it's a start.
