World Cup: A Quantitative Analysis

Goldman Sachs just released a quant report on the World Cup and you can download it here.

Included in the report are results of its statistical model that predicts a Brazil 3-1 victory over Argentina in the final, with Germany falling to Brazil and Spain to Argentina (after penalties) in the semis.

The GS model also compares their analysis of each team with odds from Ladbrokes. Included also are their predicted results vs actual outcomes of the 2010 World Cup.

In short, the report is pretty comprehensive. I don't consider myself a quant, although I do have a degree in Operations Research, so I am not going to try to poke holes in the GS model. I leave that to others in this blog that are no doubt more qualified.

For good measure, the report includes two Dream Teams - the first one selected from votes of GS clients and the second by Franz Beckenbauer no less!

Enjoy the report and happy number crunching!
