Sunderland have snapped up Carlos Cuellar on a free transfer, with the Spanish defender signing a two-year deal after his contract with Aston Villa expired on Saturday.
Cuellar, who turns 31 next month, played under Martin O’Neill at Villa after the Black Cats boss paid £8million to bring him in from Rangers in 2008 and his signing on a free transfer could be a terrific bit of business.
The arrival of Cuellar comes at the perfect time, with George McCartney leaving Sunderland over the weekend to return his former club West Ham.
