Week One of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 has ended with four matches and week two will start with four more matches happening tonight and tomorrow, with both English clubs participating. Today, however in Europe's biggest stage, we will have two of the biggest matches of the entire Round of 16 happening in London and in Turin with Arsenal hosting the defending champions FC Barcelona with their stars Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar playing up front. In Turin, the runners-up of the last final Juventus host Bayern Munich, led by the soon to be Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.
Arsene Wenger has talked about a lot that this side is easily one of the best in Europe and while the Catalan giants are not perfect, he later said that they are not far from it regardless. Barcelona have won the UEFA Champions League in four of the last 10 seasons and could be the first team since AC Milan to win back to back titles since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990. Meanwhile, Arsenal have scored in their last 13 Champions League games, their best run since 21 straight during October 2003 to November 2005. Lionel Messi has scored six goals in his last four games against Arsenal, but has never scored against the Gunners goalkeeper Petr Cech while he was at Chelsea. Will that change tonight at the Emirates?
Meanwhile 760 miles south of London, Pep Guardiola is looking to end his last season at Bayern by winning his third Champions League as a manager and to become the sixth coach in history to win it with multiple teams. But to do that, they need to face a Juventus side, who until Friday, went on a 13 match winning run in all competitions. It's a tough match to call for Massimiliano Allegri's men to face the defending Bundesliga champions but with players such as Paulo Dybala and Paul Pogba at their expense, it might easily be the match of the Round of 16. In previous meetings, Bayern earned 2-0 home and away wins over Juventus in the 2012/13 quarter-finals, but will that change and which one of these two former European champions look to set first blood?
More importantly, what is your fantasy team looking like? Let us know which match and what important aspects of the two matches are you looking forward to.
Let's chat.
