MLS Player Picks: Week 12

New, comments

There will be a lot to consider when picking players this round as Week 13 serves up a host of blanks. What we do have for Week 12 is a another double for Philadelphia Union and Orlando City. However, OC is a team with a blank the following week while Philly will have a match so planning ahead will be crucial.

Two matches for Orlando City and Philadelphia (facing each other in the first round) in Week 12 with the caveat that the Floridian side will also face a blank in Week 13. This leads me to favor Philly over OC for using your free transfers this week or having a solid bench rotation plan for players like Larin, Kaka, etc. Finding a good balance between regular starters and adding in a few double gamers each week is easier said than done. For those who follow MLS, rotation during these coupled matches is high, so with that in mind let's take a look at the potential player picks for Week 12.

Goalkeepers:

Andre Blake - Just 3 clean sheets in 11, but Blake has been the Union's number one all season and thus likely to complete all 180 minutes. The added bonus to the extra match is that unlike his opposite in the Orlando team, Philly will play again in Week 13, while most teams miss out.

Joe Bendik - For those that value Orlando over Philly, but not much else to like especially with a blank in Week 13. Bendik will cost slightly more and has recorded less points. Make sure you have a viable keeper option on rotation for next week.

David Ousted - Despite shipping 4 goals at Portland (including 2 penalties and 1 amazing Nagbe free kick), the Whitecap's shot stopper looks a solid bet with a home match against West's worst Houston. Ousted will want to erase the derby loss and is my pick of the single game keepers.

Defenders:

Keengan Rosenberry - Leading the points race of the Philadelphia defenders this season, Rosenberry has started each Union match and has opened his scoring account. With two rounds this week and the very pleasing Week 13 match, the Philly defender is nicely priced for inclusion.

David Mateos - For those that are looking for Orlando defensive coverage, Mateos represents a moderately priced route. Although his point return is less than satisfactory, he has started and finished all 90min of the last 4 matches. You could do worse than a defender with two chances at a clean sheet.

Nuno Coelho - Currently the overall leading point scoring defender, Coelho and the Sporting KC side face a favorable home match against DC United with the added benefit of a Week 13 match as well. The defender's price is also still reasonable compared to his point output.

Zarek Valentin - The new Timber's fullback has established himself and nailed down a starting spot on the roster. He is nicely priced with a winnable away match against the Chicago Fire and he has been showing he can pick up some phantoms as well.

Midfielders:

Chris Pontius - The leading Union midfield points scorer has 4 goals and 2 assists with a sub premium price and two games to boot. Did I mention Philly have a match in Week 13?

Kaka - 3 starts and 2 assists in their last match, Orlando's Brazilian playmaker is fully back on the fantasy radar. The only downside is a blank in Week 13, so have a decent sub ready or plan to use a free transfer.

Diego Valeri - Simply worth the premium price tag and taking a large share of free kicks. Winnable away match against Chicago Fire followed by a home match in Week 13 against San Jose.

Mauro Diaz - Absent last match but scored in the 2-0 win over Seattle, Diaz should be back in contention for Dallas against San Jose and has a chance to make amends in the Texas derby at home versus Houston in Week 13.

Forwards:

CJ Sapong - The obvious pick of the Union strikers with two matches and 5 goals already this season. A sub premium price and playing the vast majority of minutes are good reasons to invest.

Cyle Larin - It is hard to ignore the exploits of Orlando's leading striker, who has 6 on the season including 2 against Montreal last match. Again, if you are just tuning in, Orlando have a blank in Week 13 so have a viable alternative ready.

David Villa - Premium player for sure but will have a match in Week 13. NYCFC are actually having a solid season and Villa will always be in and around the goals.

Giovani dos Santos - 5 goals and 5 assists in his last 6 matches makes dos Santos worth every penny. Again, we are focused on players that will also play in Week 13 and the LA striker fits that bill.

Cheers! Good luck in Week 12!
