From the various comments over the past few weeks, people have been enjoying NMA’s early-season blog cup. The semi-finals are now over and the 30 finalists are decided.

There were 60 qualifying teams, and their scores this week were quite varied, with 90 points separating first from 60th. As expected, it was tough to advance to the final round — 113.5 points guaranteed qualification, only 22.5 points behind first place. There was a three-way tie for 30th, so tie-breakers came into play.

The eagle-eyed among you might notice a new team in the list - that’s because team fff1718 changed its name to EPL GALACTICO’S. This didn’t bring good luck though since they failed to make the cut.

Of the three teams in 30th place, Hall_of_fame scored only one goal while the other teams scored two, so they were out. [TyF] Benjamin Chianti had 7 goals against over 961 minutes played (0.007GA/min), while [TyF] Ozdal City* had 12 goals against (six of them thanks to Leicester conceding two to Fulham) over 974 minutes played (0.012GA/min), giving a clear victory and that vital 30th place to [TyF] Benjamin Chianti.

The final will take place in game-week 12; let’s hope that Covid-19 issues don’t disrupt the schedule any further. There are 30 teams left, but now only first place really matters — so if you’ve qualified, will you go for broke? If one of your huge discounts is slated to be out for one week, will you sacrifice long-term budget for a short term gain? Personally, I’m glad I didn’t have that decision in GW-11; I really wouldn’t have wanted to lose Jack Grealish at 11.19!

I’ve also been giving some thought to our second competition to run in the second half of the season; I will post separately on that so we can discuss the fine print. In any case, those of you who didn’t make the final will get to start fresh.
