The statistics from the global coronavirus pandemic continue to boggle the mind. Over two million people will have been stricken with COVID-19 by the middle of next week, and we surpassed 100,000 deaths yesterday.
Though China’s stats are fuzzy, the United States and the UK seem to be the hottest outbreaks right now. Britain was #2 for new cases yesterday, and was third for new deaths. Across the pond, America accounts for almost one-third of the world’s COVID cases — amazingly, the state of New York alone has reported more than any other country — and has now pulled ahead of Italy for most deaths. And sadly, we’ll reach two grim milestones today: The US will surpass 20,000 COVID deaths, and the UK 10,000.
But the news is not all bleak. At least so far, the virus has not ravaged Africa, India, Australia, and most areas of Southeast Asia and Central and South America with the same fury it unleashed on Iran, China, Europe, and North America. And in every country dealing with a major outbreak, mitigation strategies such as social distancing appear to be working — the number of new cases seems to be starting to plateau. In some instances they’re even declining. Maybe — just maybe — the pandemic is reaching a turning point before the world’s leading economies collapse from the disruption.
I’ll drink to that, and I bet you will too. So let’s raise a glass and offer a toast to better times ahead. NMA’s Virtual Pub is open, and the first round is on Ken! Cheers!
